Gameplay
SpellForce focuses on the RPG elements of controlling an avatar, and on many levels the RTS elements of leading an army as well. Theplayer begins by creating a hero, called an avatar, and thenselecting which character properties they want their avatar tobegin with. Besides the storyline, there are also plenty ofside-quests, that when successfully completed, usually grantexperience and/or item rewards.
TheCircle
The Circle was a grouping of the 13 most powerful mages from thecorners of the world, that gathered together to explore and studymagic. During their studies together they vastly expanded theiralready considerable powers, and learned to master the Allfire(known as Archfire in SpellForce2). This act granted the CircleMages immortality.
In their lust for power, they came across a book left by the oldgods that taught about a ritual known as the Convocation.
TheConvocation
SpellForce - The Order of Dawn, begins a few years after theConvocation. The Convocation was a ritual that would supposedlygrant immense power. However something went wrong, and the worldwas left fractured, broken, and scattered. The only parts of theworld that survived the Convocation, were those that were protectedby magical towers that held the power of Aonir-the Star God.
Runes
The Circle, in all their power, commissioned Runestones, stonesthat encased the souls of warriors, who would be both immortal andbound to the will of their master. With the power of theRunestones, the Circle Mages could summon vast armies in a veryshort time and with little effort. Any Deaths would be meaninglessas they could simply be re-summoned.
Storyof The Order of Dawn
The story starts with the retired Circle servant Tahira, whoreluctantly agrees to help a soldier find her lost companions andcomplete their objective, to find a powerful Runestone believed tobe in the hands of the local orc tribe.
She finds the Runestone, rescues the missing soldiers, and handsover the Runestone to the soldiers who, unbeknownst to her, wereserving Rohen Tahir, the last known surviving Circle Mage.
Rohen arrives, and takes the Runestone, finds an altar in theshadow pass located west of greyfell and summons the Runewarrior, who is both the protagonist, and the player's avatar in the game.He gives the RuneWarrior his own Runestone, thereby freeing himfrom his slavery, he tells the runewarrior that he has held what isleft of the world together and that the 'circle is closing andthese lands need a protecter'and asks him to follow a messenger tothe nearby town of greyfell where orders will be awaiting him. Hethen leaves the avatar and travels to the Wildland Pass, afterreceiving news that 'creatures of black steel' are breakingthrough. The last thing Rohen says is 'so it has begun'
The scout leads the avatar into an ambush from another, unknownmage. After freezing the avatar in ice, the mage talks about howRohen is walking into a trap and refers to him as an 'old fool',and tells the scout to kill the avatar, and deliver a magicallysealed casket which contains plans for an invasion before leaving. The messenger however fails to kill the avatar, and the avatarbegins his quest to save Rohen from his fate.
The avatar has many adventures along the way, but eventually hemeets up with Rohen before any harm has come to him, however,Rohen, surprised to learn that another Circle Mage has survived, gives the avatar a book about the Convocation and tells him to findhockans legacy and that it is the only thing that is powerfullenough to stop a Circle Mage. Rohen then unlocks the casket, onlyto find it was empty suddenly the cricle mage appears and freezesthem both, the unknown Circle Mage kills Rohen and tells the avatarto return to the Order of the Dawn and tell them the time of dawnhad past the time of war has begun.
The avatar returns to the Order, and then begins his quest forthe Phoenix Stone. Lead by the undead ghost of Hokan Ashir, aNecromancer of the Circle, whom the player gives the Mask of Belialin return, the avatar eventually finds this powerful artifact inthe ruins of Mulandir.
The avatar is about to return with the Stone to the Order of theDawn, when in an attempt to help the avatar, the army of the Orderattacks the army of the iron ones and breaches the barricade lines. The orders army however is left in ruins in the process. The avataruses this opportunity and pushes onwards towards the CircleMage.
He however walks into a trap, and has the Phoenix Stone stolenfrom him along with the book of the convocation. He continues hisdesperate pursuit of the Circle Mage, eventually fighting his wayto the Circle Mage, who at last is revealed to be none other than ayoung version of Rohen himself, intent on attempting theConvocation again, sure that this time it will work for him. Rohenthanks the avatar for his hard work, and then, using the power ofthe Phoenix Stone, walks into a time-gate, that sends Rohen backinto the past, years before the Convocation. We see an illustrationof how time passes, with Rohen growing to be his mature self again, and we see him just before the Convocation, muttering to himselfhow his younger self, about to perform the Convocation, doesn'tknow what he is doing, and how he himself was a fool, which stillrefers to his younger version. after seeing the cutscene the playeris taken back to the main menu and scan start a new game with adifferent character if they want.

The games take place on a planet called Eo, a high fantasy world ruled by near-immortal mages (collectively known as The Circle) and inhabited by various sapient races, such as humans, dwarves, (dark) elves, orcs and trolls. The mages used servants called rune warriors, summoned from magical monuments, to keep peace.
Several years before the start of the first game in the series, the mages discovered an ancient text describing the Convocation: a dangerous, but supposedly power-granting ritual. They started fighting amongst themselves, rune warriors being their main weapons of war. When the planets and stars aligned, enabling the start of the ritual, each of the 13 of the most powerful mages performed the ritual; however, unable to control the power, the world was shattered.Where once stood great continents of Fiara, Urgath and Xu, now only small pieces of land remain, centered around magical towers created by Aonir, the Star God.
The first game in the series begins with a reappearance of one of the Circle mages: Rohen. He summons a Rune warrior (the protagonist) to save the world.
Gameplay[edit]
The role-playing game aspects of SpellForce games parallel games such as Diablo, Diablo II, and Sacred in character development, skill trees, equipment customization, and top-down isometric viewing. However, the capacity to control multiple heroes often makes the gameplay comparable to that in the Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights video games.
The real time strategy aspects of SpellForce games mirror the Warcraft fantasy real time strategy games. These include the ability to control several separate factions such as 'The Realm' (humans, elves and dwarves), 'The Pact' (dark elves, gargoyles and shadows), and 'The Clans' (orcs, trolls and barbarians). Each faction has its own individual troop and building types.
SpellForce games have several game modes, including campaign mode (expositional), skirmish mode (real time strategy based), and free play (similar to campaign mode but without an overarching plot). SpellForce can also be played cooperatively or competitively in multiplayer mode.
